Generally, one dog can give birth to 2-12 puppies. So ask her how many females she has. She could have bred all her females and all the pups added up to 43 pups. You figure 5 females would produce 30 pups, 6 pups each. So yeah. But remember ask her how many times she breeds her females a year. Anymore than 1 they should be avoided. Females go into heat twice a year, so they could be bred twice. But then the mothers would be having pups right after another, so they need a break. Nature doesn't always take it course.

How many breeds do they have? If it is more than 3 and they are not involved in showing their dogs, it is definitely too many and they are definitely in it for the money. They would be considered to be a borderline commercial kennel or puppy mill. You can not possibly properly care for or socialize 43 puppies at one time - there are not enough hours in the day for that.
Run away NOW!!! Do not get a puppy from them thinking that you are saving it, that only further encourages these types of people from enslaving their poor dogs.
A GOOD breeder will only have 1 or maybe 2 breeds, each of which it actively "works" or shows. They will only breed 1 litter at a time, although sometimes there will be some overlap - but never 43 pups at a time. They will take time with each individual puppy to socialize it to humans and expose it to all kinds of things like walking on a leash, meeting other people (within reason so their health is not compromised), perhaps gunshots (if it is a potential hunting breed) and in an exceptional situation... maybe even housebreaking. They will take each litter to a veterinarian for health check ups, vaccinations, and deworming. They will give you a written health guarantee/contract and will take that puppy back at ANY stage during it's life for whatever reason - no questions asked! A good breeder will also ask you tons of questions about your living situation, where you work, how many hours you work every day/week, who your vet is, etc... that shows they are much more concerned about WHERE their puppy goes, than how much they can get for it. They may even insist that a pet quality puppy (ie: one not good enough to breed - may have minor flaws that shouldn't be reproduced) be spayed or neutered before transferring papers or selling them on limited registration so you can't register any pups out of that dog. Also, a good breeder won't charge one price with papers and another without.
If these breeders don't do much or any of the above... do not patronize them. I am so glad you are doing research, you will ultimately get your dream dog, but just don't let the desire to own a new pup get ahead of your intelligence for picking the "right" breeder!

This is a puppy mill or a back yard breeder or some who is breeding dogs for the money.
No ethical breeder would EVER have 43 pups at one time.
No more than 12 or one litter.

It depends on the quality of the kennel they run. But if it were me... I might pass. If you are considering this breeder, make sure that you GO there!! Do not let them meet you somewhere to show you puppies- you want to see the enviroment of which they are being raised. If you go there- go with you gut feeling. ASK to see the parents and other litter mates.
The downfall is when you get that many breeding animals (and following puppies) is that you can transmit diseases very quickly.
Also, if they are breeding completely for profit- you always run the risk of them treating the mom's bad (like breeding them every heat cycle).
Ask for a vet reference- who they use for vet work and talk to them about any problems the breeder has had previously.
Ask for references of people that have bought puppies from them in the past.
Go with your gut!! If it doesn't feel right just pass :)

Any "breeder" who has more than 2 litters at a time needs to be shut down. Most breeders will only have one at a time that way they can keep tabs on the mother as well as properly socialize the pups. You need to stay as far away from this person as possible. Report them even.

if this breeder has 43 puppies at a given time then she is out for the money and not the welfare of the puppies. You didn't say if she has a big kennel and have people working for her. If not then she should be reported. Not one person can take care of that many puppies at one time. I don't care if you are superwomen. If it is a kennel please , if you can , give me the name and I will check into this. If it is one person at home then report her.

I think this would be relative to the facilities available. For some 2 puppies would be too many. Look around you is it clean what kind of odor is there. Are the puppies playful and clean Are the parents there and how do they look. How many caregivers are there. I do not think you can really put a number to this question.
