It is about 4 years old and was given to us about a month ago. I guess it's used to table food so we've tried different brands of dog food. Well we have a cat and I always catch it eating cat food and it doesn't touch the dog food. Any ideas or suggestions?

YOUR DOG CANNOT LIVE ON CAT FOOD!
Cat food does not have the nutrients that a dog needs to be healthy.

Start blending dog food in with the cat food. Continue to add more dog food and less cat food each time you feed. You have to be more stubborn then your dog. It will NOT starve itself. If it picks out the cat food only, do not refill the bowl until it has eaten every kibble.

Have you tried Wellness, Natural Balance, Canidae, Innova? Those are all ghigh quality foods that have the essential ingredients your dog needs. Remember that your dog is a carnivore and meat needs to be the first few ingredients (not corn as most dog foods have). No Dog Chow or Pedigree, no Kibbles-n-Bits, Beneful, Iams, or any other foods you can find on your local supermarket or Target/Wal-mart shelf. Stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soy (fillers) and by-products.

You won't see the effects of a poor diet for years to come, but when your dog is a senior facing health issues that come with old age do you really want to compound that by adding kidney problems and everything else that can come from lack of essential nutrients it's entire life?

First thing you need to do is to put the cat food somewhere where the dog can't eat it. Second thing you need to do is find a local pet store that stocks a product called Merrick Dog food, it is available in both dry kibble and cans, I would recommend that you try this brand as I would be very surprised if your dog did not eat any of this food. Good Luck.

Cat food is much more acidic than dog food and can be fatal to dogs if eaten in large quantities. Cat food can cause major stomach problems for dogs. Cat food contains high amounts of charcoal and should not, for any reason, be fed to dogs.

Your dog is probably eating cat food as cats are more picky about taste than dogs. However, this is not the right diet for your dog as it is higher in salt and doesn't have the right vitamins and protein/starch ratio that dogs need to stay healthy. Just finishing up that cats dinner shouldn't hurt him as long as you are not feeding him exclusively on cat food. I have to feed my cat up on the kitchen counter to avoid this problem which makes a health hazard for us!

Most high quality large breed formulas are sufficient for Danes. Wellness has one, Taste of the Wild has one, Blue Buffalo has one and so on. Blue Buffalo is what I feed my dog, since it's still a better quality than most and costs less than most high quality foods. That may be something to consider for a Dane since they go through more food than the average dog.

I dont think it will be ok. But just to make sure you should check with a vet. Also try mixing dog and cat food it might work. I hope this helps!

Cat food and dog food, at least commercial brands in the cans, are essentially made of the same things (which are pretty unhealthy things, which is why most people try to have their pets eat just dry food or a mix of dry with a little wet food). The wet food has animal biproducts, euthanized cats and dogs, grains, beaks, feathers, you name it, it's pretty unsavory. But both dog and cat food, if in the can and not a human grade meat food, are the same. So I doubt cat food is bad for the dog.

cat food is very fatty for a dog and does not contain the right amount of vitamins and minerals that a dog needs.

Probably its o.k. Food most likely rather simular, meat based.

Dogs seem to be pretty resilient, scaveger types

It used to be common practice for dogs to eat people food but now its less so because its "unhealthy" for the dog. Most likey, its unhealthy for us too. Certainly in the wild, a dog will eat straight meat for example.
