phalanges in fingers, carpals and metacarpals in hands

Knuckles are joints. Those joints are named for the bones that form them.

The knuckles closest to your palm are the MCP joints - metacarpal phylangeal - formed by the metacarpals and phalanges (singular = phalanx)

The knuckles in your fingers are PIP and DIP joints, for proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. They are formed by joints between phalanges.

Hope that helps.
