Because it is the most eastern country after the International Date Line and so the sun dawns a new day first in Japan. It might also have to do with something it. Turns out this question has been answered several times here on Answers alone. Maybe Search for Questions for more information.

It's because the sun rises in Japan, seriously Japan is the furthest East country and the sun rises in the East. I guess you could call LA the land of the setting sun, he he.

because in a letter to China around 600AD Prince Shotoku wrote:
"The Emperor of the land where Sun rises (nihon/hi iduru) sends a letter to the Emperor of the land where Sun sets. How are you doing?"
(China were not amused)

They have 2 cities that are named after the sun, thus "Land of the Rising Sun" - see link:

the kangi symbols used to write japan (nihon or nippon)
are hi meaning day or sun pronounce ni when combined with the second symbol hon which is pronounced moto when on its own meaning source or origin
so it comes from the meaning of the two kangi symbols when they are written seperately
hi = sun
moto = origin
when written together the sounuds change to ni and hon
hon also means book and ni is their number two
so we could also call them "book two" lol
I would say as it is the meaning of the kangi (chinese writing characters) that it is what they called japan as from china the sun would rise over japan

it's because it's the furthest east so the sun rises there first but it still puzzles me because the world is a globe and if you keep going east you end up in the so-called west but got there by going east in the first place! :-)
