Although he's 50, he's still a big kid. Likes to have fun, loves his family, etc.

Any ideas on something appropriate?

This might not be fun but 50 is quite the milestone so maybe something like a really nice watch. I don't know how much you usually spend on him but spend more then you usually do and get something he'll have for years and years maybe even something to pass on to the kids (if he has any).

If you want to go for something fun, what about ski diving lessons, or para sailing, something fun and exciting!

You gotta get him a couple 50 gag gifts too, like a mug or a shirt.

Take him for a night to remember,Go see a show (Mamma mia would be a good one for a 50 year old as he will remember ABBA) and then a nice family meal.Wish him Happy Birthday from me as i will also turn 50 in September
