Can I get a viable stool sample from the litter box? The stool is runny and makes a big clump in the litter. Do I need to try to get one that's clean (directly from the cat)?

It's fine out of the litter box, but if you are taking it to a vet...it's needs to be fairly fresh. Take him the newest piece of fecal matter.

Take the freshest you can from the litter box. The litter box material should not matter.

Depends on what you need it for, my vet says that straight out of the litter box is fine for their annual fecal exam.
