Why did not you ask them when you were there?

I have been there too but I am not American. I got the impression they hate the US govt but not individual American people. Americans who were there at the same time as me did not complain they they were hated but I suspect they got bored with all anti-US propaganda (and I guess N Koreans get bored with the anti-N Korea propaganda from the US).
I think they hate the US government for a few reasons.
In the Korean war, the US bombing destroyed virtually every city in the country, some of the heaviest bombing anywhere anytime. Some US generals (espcially MacArthur) also wanted to use nuclear weapons to close the N Korean/Chinese border but Pres Truman refused and fired MacArthur. It was a brutal war on both sides. Another post says they lost the war; I would say it was a draw as the cease-fire line, the 38th parallel, was almost exactly the same border as when the war started. Neither side gained sigificant territory (though N Korea did gain the historic town of Kaesong), both lost a huge number of lives (about 2.5 million total) and buildings etc. Since the war the US and N Korea have been threatening each other continually. Read up on the Korean war and you may understand better - the N Koreans seem unable to forget it.
Also N Korea wants Korea to be reunified and sees the American occupation of the South as wrong (the S Korean Military is still under US command by the way, not independent).
They also complain about the trade blocades and say they cannot get enough machinery, fertiliser etc. They claim that these made the mass starvation (initially caused by extreme drought followed by flooding) a few years ago worse, but I assume the west would disagree on that and would point to the food aid that was supplied.
Most N Koreans also have almost no access to information from outside so only hear what their government tells them and they all seem to have the same opinion on anything - the official one. I understand that they cannot even receive foreign radio, as their radios are pre-tuned to local stations.

i think it is because of the war between the (pyongyang) north & south korea way back 1950's if i'm not mistaken.
america was the alliance of the south while russian was with the north but unfortunately north was defeated, that's why since then they've been seperated, north became communist then south became democratic.

but don't worry... it is not only americans they hate. even their fellow south koreans. don't u know that up to now, both are countires are still continuing military practices in case either of them attack? & southerns can't go to north? & the same thing with those from south? but this thing they are trying to somehow do something about it in order for their own development, they are doing "talks" & certain aggreements to settle this thing.

first thing to remember is that not all north Koreans hate Americans some even hate their own regime but are afraid to speak against it.
the rest where brain washed under communist ideology since the Koran war an ideology that sees the capitalist way of life which America and the west represent as evil.

Hello from Toronto, Canada:
I am sorry you had to go through that over there but.... everyone does not like what American government is doing all over the world. I went to London, England last winter and at a very nice hotel everyone there thought I was American and I heard a few UK people chatting and saying don't talk to her she is American. Well I spoke out and said I was from Toronto, Canada and then half the hotel came up and smiled at me and said hello and even a few of the guys in the hotel asked me out for dinner!!
I am sorry for all the Americans who go abroad and get this kind of treatment. You just have to blame BUSH government. Sorry, You people chose him.

Waving from Canada

Politics, my friend, politics, the public are subjected to
hate campaigns instigated by their government like we
are in the free world are given to see only the bad side
of the Muslims. Btw I can't remember reading of any
good deeds about the Muslims, only suicide bombers,
random firing of rockets into Israel and so on.

The North Koreans are fed a daily dose of anti-American propaganda.. Unfortunetly the Iraq war feeds the propagandists just what they need to broadcast. I live in Mexico and I get blamed for building a "wall of shame" on the U.S. border.. We suffer the blunders of our polititions.

dats not exactly true. Koreans are just uncomfortable around Americans from the rumors they hear. Other times they are curious. We are not racist or anything. Koreans there just don't like the things they hear about America

They are communist.
They hate the democracy, and they hate America for trying to help S.Korea to become one, ever since the war.
Bush has nothing to do with their original hatreds, but, seems to gave them a chance to say "Ah Hah! Didn't I say so?"

hate comes from a personal opinion. dont take it too serious. eveybody is being educated differently. its hard to tell what is right and what is wrong. the same ideology.
so everybody just chill and think for a second.
