My feeling is that perhaps its a treatmant that has little or no benefit and when they have these follow up sessions and the patients are asked if they feel better its possible a lot of them who suffered memory loss could just feel like saying no i don't need more treatment thanks I'm all better now

Yes ECT stands for Electroconvulsive Therapy, and despite what the first person said, it is very common in treating people with severe depression. When I was doing my social work internship I was working at a psychatric hospital, we usualy had three to four people per day receiving the therapy. The client is induce into what is known as a bilateral tonic clonic seizure, which means he loses consiousness and he has convulsions (seizures) It is believed that this affects several kinds of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are used to send signals between neurons. Serotonin is one of these neurotransmitters and it controls sleep, mood and appetitie. The only question not answered is how does ECT cause a flood of serotonin, It is produced in the gastroinestinal tract, and stored in the platelets in blood.

this is a very controvential area, Me personaly I would not have it done, it is not very nice almost barbaric. The idea is ok but the practice is not so good. having looked at this doing higher mental health at college I reckon the succcess rate is much lower than 80% but it has to be your choice, and I do not think they can force you to have it, you have a right to refuse treatment unless there was something in the mental health act that meant you were deemed unable to make a decision for yourself. But i fell this is not the case here with you

I'm sorry I don't know if my answer is relevant to your question, but just looking at someone having ECT gives me the creeps. It really looks inhumane & scary, I don't know how they can do it & how they still allow this. It should be banned, it messes people up.
I don't think they can force it on people, can they? if they tried to force it on me I'd fight them to death
