I realize the frosting is after they are cool. But what about the decorative sugar for Christmas cookies? Thanks

The sugar (and cinnamon and silver candies, etc.) go on before baking.

Put it on before you bake. The sugar on top is for decoration rather than flavor. Also, if you beat one egg (called an egg wash) and brush it over the top of the cookie before adding the decorative sugar, it will stick better and the cookies will have a shiny top as well due to the egg.

put the cookies on the cookie sheets then sprinkle them with the colored decorator sugars so the sugar will stick to the cookies. I use just a paste of water and powder sugar with extract and colors to make icing for cookies so it will dry properly. That way left over cookies (those people don't scarf down immediately out of the oven) can be stacked on plate or in cookie jars and tins. Swipe the icing on cookies with side of hand!! Don't lick hand while doing it either no matter how tempting it might be.

It dpends upon whether you wish to decorate with frosting or without it. If using sprinkles and dragees with it; you apply them after. You can sprinkle coloured sugars on before baking if you wish, but they seem to be not quite as sharp in decoration.

Adding sprinkles before baking.....they melt and look a little funny. Let the cookies cool, then use a small grill brush or new clean kids paint brush and brush on a little corn syrup. This will make for a nice shiny glaze and will make all your sprinkles stick and look pretty, not melted!

Yes you decorate it before but for icing goes on after.
