They just call it that, because all the major powers of the world are involved. It doesn't mean that war is happening in every corner of the world.

the reality is the nightmare. I wouldn't say we are in a world war,
I would say that we are definitely heading down the correct path for this situation with the war against terrorism compounded by the rants of the lunatic running north Korea and the passive aggressive actions by the Iranian government to escalate in to a third world war. on a positive note if it does happen it will probably be humanites last world war. because when all is said and done all that will be left are small groups of people scattered around the planet cockroaches and radioactive fallout.
sweet dreams.

A world War Can Be Defined By the Countries Particapating and where it takes place. World war 2 for example realy was a World War. You Had Fighing in Europe,Russia,Africa,The Balkans,Asia, and Both the Pacific,Atlanitc and Indian Oceans

while that are many countries that help us with the war on terror it can hardly be called a world war

a world war would be every major power going at it in a full scale war. some people say that the war on terror is the 3rd world war, its not because there is no giant army were fighting.
