When visiting LA, stay on the north side of town: Burbank, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, UCLA, Santa Monica. The boardwalk at the beach in Santa Monica goes for miles all the way to Venice Beach and beyond. Hollywood is kinda seedy with some goths, but other than that I can assure you that you will enjoy LA.

When people say L.A. it is not usually referring to just Los Angeles. Los Angeles is used loosely to describe lots of the surrounding cities/suburbs of L.A. I have lived in "L.A." for about 20 years and have only been to the actual city of Los Angeles about a dozen times. When including ALL those cities..yes some of them are rubbish, and some are extremely gorgeous and nice. If you come here you might want to limit your time in the actual city of Los Angeles, but spend some time in surrounding cities. It is a LOT different than New York. I found New York a little more comparable to San Francisco, but not L.A.
L.A. is SO large, I'm sure that you would enjoy at least a few of the many cities that make up the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles

Congested
Closes up at 10ish
Extremely diverse
Beaches
A lot to do, before 10pm
Certain areas of every big city, including NY and LA, are rubbish. Great places in LA to visit are:
West Los Angeles
West Hollywood
Venice Beach
Beverly Hills
Skid Row (downtown...you gotta see it)

LA is not rubbish, but it is a rather large area...even 'downtown' has its interesting points, for example, all over LA proper are 28 (#?) local artist designed bike stands, most of which aren't recognized as such...I lived downtown for 4 years and only found 8...Also, while much of downtown has been converted to non-inhabited computer occupancy, there are still a number of classic building, like the Bradbury (wherein Bladerunner was filmed)...Most people tend to think of LA as Hollywood, or Beverly Hills, or Santa Monica, (or, perversely enough, Universal City), so you need to be aware of what you are planning to do and where you are planning to be visiting...I have a fondness for Downtown LA that most Southern Californians don't share...all in all, most of Southern California is interconnected suburbs and you can't really appreciate it as a whole on foot (or even as a short-term visitor)...not like NYC where you can walk all over the place. It is nothing like New York, except we have an equal amount of social blight.

Of course it is not crap. I live in Los Angeles and I've been to NYC (only for one night, but it was amazing).
L.A. is the "entertainment capital" of the USA. So of course there's tons to do. Just one tip--do NOT go to Hollywood. Contrary to popular belief, that town is run-down.
Here's why:
Tourists arriving in Southern California often confuse Hollywood with Beverly Hills.
Many visitors come to Hollywood expecting to find a gleaming city filled with movie stars, posh restaurants, grand mansions and expensive shopping areas. They are, of course, very disappointed; the actual suburb of Hollywood is far from glamorous. The real "Hollywood" is a state of mind, not a place; it's not so much a city as it is shorthand for the general movie and entertainment industry.
But if that fabled, glittering Hollywood of the tourist's imagination exists anywhere, it exists in Beverly Hills. It is in Beverly Hills, not Hollywood, where many stars actually live, dine and shop.
If you go to Hollywood the first time, you obtain a bad impression of Los Angeles itself.
Make sure you stay in the 310 (Westside) of Los Angeles. Get to see Beverly Hills, Malibu, and some nice communities.

I went to both LA and NYC last year, on the way to and back from New Zealand, for two days in each place.
In LA I stayed in Hollwood, right on the Walk of Fame. I managed to explore on foot and took minibus tours to local attractions.
I'd love to visit both LA and NYC again, only this time for a week each, as I feel there was so much I didn't see in each place.

I used to live there...it's pretty cool. There are some neighborhoods with a bunch of homeless people in the streets...and some places that you definetley should NOT go walking around near alone at night (or in the daytime.) But there are pretty cool things to see, and you can visit Hollywood.

Completely different to New York (Manhattan island) which is compact, LA is a vast urban sprawl, though it does have some interesting bits. San Francisco a better bet.
