It's the most expensive item at my local Wine & Spirits distributor. If it's as delicious as it is costly, I would like to purchase a bottle for the Jan 1 celebration.
When tasting it, to what characteristics should I pay particular attention?

Its excellant and a once ever couple of year treat for me. I buy it down in the Islands for about $90.00 when we travel, I want to try Crystal. When tasting Sparkling wine or Champagne, you are looking for dry rich flavor with a sparkle, no bitterness. There is a Sparkling wine called Domaine ST. Totally over rated. there are many highly rated Champagnes that have better wine Spectator scores well above a simple name brand
Look for a DRAPPIER brut 1996 Champagne Carte d'Or, it sells for under $70 US and it rated a 96/99 on wine spectators best wine list for 2006. just published this December. to compare a DOM was rated a 93 for 1996 and CRISTAL a 94 for 1996 both costing between $150 and $275 respectively

Alternatives that taste just as good in the less costly $45 dollar range are Tatinger (spelling?), Perrier Jouette, Moet & Chandon White Star.

I personally cant tell the difference between a £20 bottle or a £100 bottle.
Just go with your taste not a label or price

ALL champagne is overpriced - you pay for the name which is why the French defend it so aggressively. You can get just as good, if not better, from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or California.

It's as good as the person who's drinking it thinks it is
