It was used so much it has become a joke. But is it really?
Have you ever been in an argument and said something stupid that made
things 10 times worse, and asked yourself, "Why did I say that?"

Has nothing to do with the "Devil". It has to do with people getting into emotional thinking and not thinking about the consequences of their words. If you allow yourself to get upset, this sort of thing is bound to happen. You just want to say something that will "hurt" or end the argument, and often, you succeed.

If, on the other hand, you aren't worried about "winning", or "making them understand", you are much less likely to say things that will hurt another. If you actually discipline yourself to think about the words you are spewing, you'll avoid making things worse.

The best diplomats are those who refuse to allow thier emotions to color the words they speak. We can learn from such as these. Speak words that are helpful to your cause, but do not insult or hurt the other person.

That doesn't mean that we never call someone on their crap when they are seriously wrong, but we don't do so in a way that slams shut doors that we wish to remain open.

Actually it never has been true. The devil does waive temptation in our eyes, he wants us to fall for his tricks but the bottom line is we make ourselves do it.

Blaming the devil is just a way of refusing to take responsibility for our own acts of evil. The devil knows where you are weak and knows how to tempt you. But ultimately you make a choice to do what comes natural, sin.

I am not sure if it is so much outdated as simple cop out. The devil does not make you do anything. You are responsible for your actions and how you respond to situations that come about.

Very outdated.
Mankind has always tried to blame their bad choices on outside forces. Serpents, women, the Devil, Evil Spirits, Witches, Politicians, bad preachers, those people "I" was hanging out with.

More often than not it is just us giving in to our baser instincts. It does make for good drama when you ask to be forgiven when it goes bad or you get caught. "I was tempted!!" Yeah, you were, by yourself.

Emotions and intellect are two different things. We say stupid things some time because we don’t think it through. The devil doesn’t control your emotions. You don’t even have complete control over your emotions, but you can control your intellect and never be so small as to NOT say that you’re sorry.

Edit:
Typo i had to change the last sentence. ^

If you believe in the devil and say that then you are just trying to avoid admitting you did something wrong. If you believe in the devil you believe in the Lord or God ,and know that free will was given to us ,so we have the ability to choose between good and evil.

The Devil cannot force us to do anything that we do not want to do unless you were under total possession.
So the statement is simply not true, it is just a lousy excuse for bad behavior.

Well if speaking RELIGIOUSLY then it`s true that the DEVIL forces people to do SINS and BAD THINGS. But if you ask it just as a figure of expression, then it`s quiet OUTDATED !
