Once made into decorations, royal icing will stay put indefinitely, as long as it does not get wet or stored in a high-humidity environment.
Marzipan will last the life of your cake, if it's a cake that will be eaten. If it is a display cake, the life of the marzipan should be shortened. True marzipan is made with almond paste which contains almond oil. If stored too long in a non-airtight environment, the almond oil in the marzipan can turn rancid. Marzipan can be stored in a refrigerated, airtight container for about one month, or in an airtight container in the freezer for approximately 6 months.

Marzipan will generally last for a few days to a week depending on how the cake is prepared and stored. Royal Icing is what is known in the confectioner's world as edible cement. Royal Icing will dry and harden within a few hours. Ever see a gingerbread house? It is held together with Royal Icing. The Marzipan is very nice and has a cherry/almond flavor. You could also use fondant which is very nice on cakes as well. Easy, but fancy looking. I hope that this helps. Good Luck.
