She is just nervous to be around people, probably because she had a bad experience with a young child once. Bring her around other people besides you and your family and she should be alright. :-)

I am guessing that this cats is a new one, as this is typical behavior for a new cat. Sometimes cats will hide, especially if the home is full of new people, high traffic, or if there are lots of kids running around. The cat just needs to slowly get acclimated. The same thing happened to my cat about 10 years back, and He started to come out of hiding within a few days of having him home. In addition, your cat probably isnt in the hiding spot all of the time, just when people are up and moving... She probably is checking out the new place at night, when there is less movement.

This could mean that she is a lap cat, or that she is very shy. I have 5 cats and one of them has that problem too. But when you get her out on your lap she falls straight asleep. Try to search her hiding spots to see if there is anything that makes her want to stay in her hiding spot, like dead bugs, food, toys, or she might possibly think that her hiding spots are actually a litter box.
Hope this helps

Hiding can be a sign of illness or fear, of you or other cats in the house who may be bullying her.
If she is not ill (and she should be checked by a vet for that) there are flower essences you might use with her to help her overcome her fear and/or deal with the other cats.
You can go to www.spiritessence.com and read about how flower essences are used with cats (and other animals) for emotional issues.

Some kitties like to hide. It makes them feel safe and secure. Others sleep anywhere, especially like to sleep in the sun.
