If you give them the check they gave you, really it is returning their gift, not giving them a gift.

If you want to return the gift, then merely post or hand it to them. If you post it ensure it is not negotiable, so it can't be stolen and cashed by anyone else. You might include a short note, explaining why you are returning their gift.

If you want to give the person a gift of money, the minimum would require you to bank their check and write one of your own to give to the person. Again a short note encouraging them to buy something they would enjoy is appropriate.

You should be prepared to answer a question from them about how you spent their check . . .

Why would you return free money? Cash it!

Not really a good idea unless you want to spite them.
