I wonder if the Kims family had the Onstar or a car cell phone (offered for a fee along with Onstar for the Saab owners), or a regular cell phone when they got lost. If they did and the devices did not work, maybe these electronics should be declared dangerous outside of big cities because they fail when needed to save lives...

Cell phone, yes. Onstar, no.

It was a cell phone tower "ping" that narrowed their location to that stretch of road.

The electonics (or anything else for that matter) are not what is dangerous. It is the lack of knowledge or understanding combined with bad choices that resulted in the tragic end to that scenario.

If I remember right, it was a weak signal from their cell phone that led to them being found.
