The p stands for progressive scan and the i stands for interlaced.

What this means is that when progressive scan draws a picture, it fills in every line every time. Interlaced fills in every other line, and uses the next time it draws the picture to fill the in between spots. 1080p will give you a better picture, especially with a 1080p source such as a playstation 3 or an HDDVD or BluRay player.

1080i= interlaced
1080p= progressive

1080p is much better.
