My friend has a son who is turning one next week. He can use certain spoons but she can't afford to buy new spoons. ( Long story but she is a single mom). I had found Gerber's Loop Spoons and wonder if they would help. They look easier for a disabled baby to hold and they are also coated on the scoop and handle portion. What would anyone with experience in illnesses such as this suggest for a child this age? I have her tons of plates, sipper cups, bpwls, and the spoons I had from my kids. Everything worked except the spoons. I had basic spoons since I didn't have to search for certain items such as this. I just want to learn as much as I can and buy her the sppons that will help the most.

I honostly have never tried the gerber spoons but they do sound like they would be easier to hold. I think that they even make some spoons that are curved so they would be easier to direct to his mouth. I would definantly give it a try with the gerber spoons. Good Luck.

Look at the website for Abilitations... it is a magazine/catalog for special equipment for children with exceptionalities. They have some really great feeding equipment that would work wonderfully for a child with CP. They have large, fat handles that are easy for a child with low muscle tone to grip. There are also some spoons (sold at Walmart) made by Gerber that have short, fat handles, with holes in the bowl part of the spoon that are great for children who spill a lot. The holes actually help keep the food kind of suctioned onto the spoon so the child is less likely to spill. The abilitations catalog is http://abilitations.com
