Well, let's take a look at the context. This quote is from Jesus, from the record of a discussion that John wrote down in his Gospel. Jesus is at the Temple courts, being challenged by certain members of the religious orders.
Starting in John 8, verse 31 he says:
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, "We are Abraham's desendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanant place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
First of all recognize that question at hand is really about authority and Jesus is using the slave-free relationship as a metaphor. He's saying that the religious orders were holding people captive, giving them unnecessary burdens, much as a slave is captive and subject to heavy burdens. The truth Christ offered was set them free from the malice, ill-will, questioning and accusations that were going on.
Today, we can take Jesus' words and apply them to things that hold us "captive" - things that hold us back from truly enjoying a relationship with God and the delights of God's world: fear, uncertainty, doubt, hate, etc.

I have def been set free by telling the truth. I had held a certain lie in for years and when I finally got the courage to tell the truth I felt as if a HUGE weight had been lifted from my heart. Anyone with a conscienous will feel better after telling the truth.

Any thing that hurts, could be true, and it hurts because we dont want to see it, insteat we cover it up with everything and have a false sense that it is not there, It is better to live in truth because you will only know happiness. Then perhaps you will see what makes people miserable, Eg, people who are empty within tend to fill their homes with everything, shopping is their addictions, because they are unconsciuosly filling the gap, denying truth, is not good, because it oozes out as poison because of stagnation within.
Hence it is better to deal with the emptiness (truth) and this shall set you fee to be happy. It is common to compare ourselves but we forget we are the only single prints on earth, and who are we comparing with? We are only one! This is truth! and this truth shall set you free!

My own experience; I accepted Jesus in my heart as my Lord and Savior based simply on Romans 10:9-10.
9:That if you confess with your mouth The Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10: For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

When you tell a lie you lock yourself in a vicious cycle of lying to cover up for any inconsistencies the first lie contained. Fortunately, when you tell the truth you do not have to worry about covering up anything. So the truth sets you free. You are no longer "locked" into the cycle of lie begetting lie.
