The correct answer is E. Intercalated discs are gap junctions between the cells of the heart muscle. The purpose is to allow ion flow between cells so that the heart beats as a unit. Heart muscle is the only tissue in the body that has these.

The true answer is C. Here's why:

A: gap junctions link the cells electronically so that electric stimuli can be passed from one cell to the next

B: Nope, they need oxygen. If they don't have oxygen, you get a heart attack.

C: Yea, they need energy. Glucose gives lots of energy.

D: They do indeed have striations. Cardiac cells are striated.

E: As I said for A, they are linked via gap junctions. Desmosomes link the cytoskeletal networks of adjacent cells.
