The US government thinks it's so important that they pass legislation to stop it. It's a bit like Prohibition, 2006 style.

Will it work? I doubt it! Prohibition in the 1920s was eventually repealed and so will this be. People want to gamble and they don't have to dress up and go to casinos for it.

If you have the above, it's a big deal. And right now, it's a big deal that isn't paying a lot in the "taxes" department. Of course, in America there is always the Protestant streak that worries about morality and "the children" and America on the highway to Hell, provoking God's wrath. True to our Strong Emotions Make for Bad Legislation style of governing, certain constituents have made it known to legislators that gambling is bad, mmmkay? And the low entry barriers- have a PayPal account? Good!- to starting up and playing make it a little too easy for some peoples' comfort levels.

The government sees it as a big deal for two reasons -
1: The online gambling industry is totally unregulated, and people are not paying their required taxes a lot of the time.
2: Christian conservatives don't like gambling (for some reason).
