This question is directed to those who have had this experience inside a MRI image scanner.

The MRI machine is a huge magnet. And the sound is it doing its job taking pictures of the inside of your body. The noise is caused by electrical currents rising in the wires of the magnets being opposed by the main magnetic field.

I receintly had an MRI ( not an experience I care to repeat ever), but I was told that sound was the pumps that inject some substance into the machine to keep it working properly.

I think the noise you are referring to are the gradient magnets inside the MRI machine.
