There are many lines of thought on this. One I like, is that our souls are in a holding tank (for lack of a better analogy) and we actually get to chose what adversities will we face in our lives before we are born! This leads to the thinking that all of our troubles on earth are tests. The more tests you pass, the braver your soul is and the better place you get in heaven.
