Playing poker for money is illegal almost anywhere but a casino (although I know MN recently made it legal to have small scale poker tournaments outside casinos). BUT, it is very unlikely that the local police will care enough to do anything about your poker club. As long as you guys are just playing poker, and your not illegally serving alcohol (making a scene, doing drugs, etc) I doubt that anything will ever happen to you.

I'm guessing that soon enough most states will actually legalize poker, as it is only gambling if you want it to be. I play poker all the time - I never gamble (never played a slot machine, never bought a lotto ticket, never played craps or roulette, only play blackjack for fun)......

Technically, with the information provided, no it isn't. The first words that come to my mind when I hear the words "small Kentucky town" is "good old boy network". Welcome to adulthood, where there's a difference between how things are supposed to run and how they actually run. I figure the operations are too small to be a concern for the cops, but if/when it gets too big someone in the municipal area will want their cut to keep the cops at bay. And if the operators tick off the powers that be, expect a quick wave of morality to wipe 'em out of business. Besides, poker is the game of Outlaws, so skirting the laws isn't new or an impediment to poker players.

Sounds like the fix is in. The cops are paid off.
