Yes it is possible to learn on a short board. However you will make much quicker progress if you start on a slightly longer board e.g if you are 6ft then try learning on a 7'8+ then later on you can drop down sizes fairly easily. Many learners who start on a shortboard often give up surfing due to frustration. At the end of the day you can always sell the longer board to fund a shorter board. (coincidently shortboards do not hold their value nearly as well as longboards / funboards. There is always an endles stream of good second hand shortboards floating around the same cant be said about the other).

Start with a funboard. You'll have a great wave catcher that still lets you turn. You won't need to worry going from a 9' to a 6'x" board since you're already 1/2 way there. I've taught a few people how to surf and I personally prefer to start them on a 7-8 fun board if they really plan on sticking to surfing. If you just want to try it on vacation to see if you can stand up - then go with a 9'+ longboard - you'll stand up for sure.

Of course this totally depends on other factors such as your athletic ability, where you're learning to surf (conditions), how much time you have, instructor, etc. I learned to surf on a short board, on my own in San Francisco, which is painful considering the water is cold and conditions are harsh. So yes, it can be done, I would just advise having a good instructor, more gentle conditions, and a longer board, as that would have been more helpful.

i cant inform you any surefire a thank you to no longer appear like an fool lol, different than getting out of different surfers' techniques whilst they capture a wave. i might say the friendliness of the surfers relies upon on the place you surf. i surf in malibu, so which you have have been given your older adult men who're many times friendly and can help you out some. and then there is the impolite adult men (childrens-overdue 20's ) who think of they're hotshots and could be impolite and act as though they very own the worldwide. luckily i dont might desire to many times cope with any catty woman attitudes because of fact there at the instant are not many female surfers right here. i might advise you prepare lots over the summer season, then interior the fall you would be so lots extra suitable and extra soft, subsequently appearing much less idiotic lol. the substantial tip for surfing is to easily save practising. with the intention to income a feeling of convenience and agility interior the water, you will possibly desire to coach. you will see that as you get extra suitable at surfing you truly wont care what different individuals think of when you consider which you would be having lots relaxing and in basic terms being concentrated on catching the terrific waves.

It all depends on where you live, and how crowded it is. If you are in Malibu, or southern Cal. you can, but just be prepared to get clobbered from time to time (Longboarders catch the waves from further in, while shortboarders have to wait for a nice drop). You will also have to wait for a nice set, can catch anything to small because it will not give you momentum. Hope that helps.

Yes, you can. But better if you start on longer boards.

You could, I did.
But then again, you need consistent waves.
And being from Hawaii we got um' all the time.
