well they crying part is a distinct soft mewing. If they're sad, they may want more attention, or to be left alone depending on the cat. Also, if they're sad, you can usually tell because there is a sudden drop of energy, happy attitudes and other things.

If the kittens are very young, like newborns, they may be crying for food because they're hungry.
They may also be in some sort of distress - maybe they're cold or too warm, or etc.
Older kittens may cry for the same reason, or they may be asking for "attention" and just need some human contact and petting.
You didn't provide enough information, so I'm shooting in the dark here. There is always the possibility the kittens are ill or in pain, and you should evaluate the circumstances and try to determine if that is the case. Then, take appropriate action.

when cats are sad they'll just mope around the house not doing anything, they might just sit somewhere with their head bowed and eyes open like thinking, cats don't cry like humans do but they do get sad
