I never buy salted butter, nor do I buy garlic salt, onion salt or anything with salt added. My feeling is that if I want salt in my food, then I should be able to decide how much salt I want. It's not just a health issue, it's also a taste issue. Cookies should be made with unsalted butter, and just add a pinch of salt to the dough while mixing the dry ingredients.

I always buy Cabot creamery butter, but if this is not available, Land O Lakes is a good alternative.

Good vanilla extract is just as important as good butter in sugar cookies. Use pure vanilla, and a good brand of it. You'll be surprised at the difference.

I use Lucerne unsalted butter for cooking. It's cheap and seems to do the job just fine.
