Nail biting is a common habit and one that's not easy to kick. It is a nervous habit. Nail biting is the most common of the so-called "nervous habits," which include thumb sucking, nose picking, hair twisting or tugging, and tooth grinding, and is the most likely to continue into adulthood. Using bitter clear polish to remind yourself to stop, and a nail file to smooth away tempting jagged edges may help.

These links have a variety of suggestions.

Sally Hansen has a product specifically designed to help break this awful habit. It's very inexpensive and can be found at most drugstores as well as Wal-Mart. It looks like clear nail polish but doesn't dry looking like you have anything on your nails. It's got a nasty taste so when you "forget" and put your finger in your mouth to bite your nail, you'll be instantly reminded. The great thing is the bitterness doesn't linger in your mouth for long after you've tried to bite your nails. I chewed my nails for over 20 years and once I tried this product...within 2 weeks, my nails were actually growing and I no longer bite my nails. It's a great product that actually works!

Good luck!

I have also had a bad habbit of biting my nails as well. I find painting my nails with black nail polish works. I mean, I am pretty girly myself, but black nail polish does work. Also, you can try dipping them in vinager and avoid washing your hands, but if you use the bathroom or something and you must, then carry a spray bottle with you filled with vinager. That stuff tastes nasty and you will stop. Trust me, biting your nails is awful now, but if you just really try and stop, then they with look beautiful.

every time you find yourself biting your nails, stop and tell yourself I'm not going to do this anymore; it will take a month or so, but you will stop if you discipline yourself and don't dismiss it when you catch yourself at it. A lot of people try to stop a habit, without actually trying to stop. They'll find themselves biting their nails, for example and say to themselves, o i'm nervous, i'll stop later or o, i can't stop this or just refuse to acknowledge they're chewing on themselves. Discipline isn't easy, it is a process.
