Ok so I didn't want to offend anyone with my question but I'm really wondering ... I've got a shishtzu that's about 2 years old, in the past three months, every now and then after he pees, he scrapes the ground right in front of where he went with his hind feet -- why does he do this? I'm assuming it's some sort of instinctual thing, but is there a reason for this behavior?

Dogs have scent gland in their hind quarters and by kicking up, they are marking their territory.

It's an instinct that many dogs have- it's an attempt to cover it up. It's usually males that do it, but I had a female German Shepard that used to do it all the time.
