Maybe he's feeling awkard and his friends are teasing him about you. Ask him if he's fine being friends. Explain to him that your invitation to the drama activity was actually your way of befriending him. If he doesn't want to go, you'd still graciously respect his wishes. See what he has to say from there.

Depending if he told you about the other plans or not. If he did then I think the first one to ask should follow the other if you are included. Maybe you two could compromise and attend both depending on the times.
