Assuming they were walking continously aside from a few breaks? (I am trying to calculate approx. how far people could cover in 24 hours throughout time depending on what technology was available to them and this in relevance to our stone-age ancestors!)

Well, it takes me about 15 minutes to walk 1 mile. So, I COULD walk 4 miles in one hour. If I kept that pace I COULD travel about 96 miles in 24 hours. Thats with no stops and no changes in pace, but who is capable of doing that? Perhaps some people, but not many!

Historical accounts of native Americans and some early pioneers document some incredible distances that people traveled. There are numerous accounts of people running around 80 - 100 miles in a 24-hour period. The longest verified distance in North American history probably goes to Big Hawk Chief from the Wichita Tribe - he ran 120 miles in 20 hours.

Some 24 hour races have produced results of well over 100 miles, but the average person 50 or 60 would probably be more realistic.

go outside and pick point "A" and point "B" one mile apart. walk the mile at the normal speed you mention above and time yourself. whatever amount of minutes it took you to get from A to B is the standard amount of time it will take to cover one mile. assuming the person is walking a straight line over flat terrain, multiply your time times the number of miles someone could walk within a 24 hour period.
