My very intellectual husband lacks common sense. I find it so difficult to believe someone so smart can not have an ounce of common sense. I want so much to believe it's just that instead of finding out he's using it as an excuse. Thanks.

Do you think dependant personality disorder or Asperger's could be an illness that would cause lack of common sense?

If there is an actual medical condition that causes a common sense deficiency, then they'd better start working on a cure, because just about every person I know or meet is suffering from it!
Isn't it so frustrating when people just don't think?!
Like a lot of people here on Answers.... "I'm allergic to bananas, what medication can I take?" Duh, stop eating bananas.
I don't think they can use it as an excuse - they're not aware they have a problem :)

there are many forms of intelligence. Common sense intelligence usually involves a spectrum called Insight. Some people have a lot of book knowledge, but very little insight. Another closely related form of intelligence is Judgment.
A common medical condition that causes a person to have poor judgment and poor insight is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. He may or may not have traits of this. It may be that he was passed Fetal Alcohol Syndrome traits thru his past family tree.

Sometimes peoples' thought processes get pushed together and so crowded that it's hard to think clearly. I think I've heard 'lack of common sense' used when describing a certain mental condition. The only thing I can tell you is to remind him to really think through stuff before he acts.
