I have a 8 week old puppy and also a 6 year old dog. We have been trying to crate train the puppy to sleep in the crate at night. Our older dog loves her "home". We thought of putting both crates next to eachother, in hope the puppy would not feel left alone. However, she will only sleep when I'm in the room with her. If I decide to let her sleep in the bed with us until she is a little older, will I be creating a larger problem? Will my older dog be jealous? Both crates are in a separate bedroom from ours. Would it help to move the crates into our bedroom at night? I can only get about 3 hours of sleep at a time right now based upon the puppies schedule. I understand having to let her outside to go potty, the problem isn't that. The problem is the hour it takes to get her to calm down in the crate, only to be awoke by her cries when she discovers I have left the room. Any suggestions? Or any recommendations on good literature for crate training? This is our first time having to do it.

Puppies are just that.....puppies. Moving the crates into the room will help, but keep in mind that u will hear the pup rustling around and it may keep you awake. You may also try putting a clock in the crate with the pup. Sometimes it works depending on the breed.

Yes, it is fair. I have had the same situation in my home. I have two German Shepherd Dogs, ages 16 months and 25 months. Both are crate trained. The older dog has the run of the house. The younger dog is crated whenever we leave the house for any length of time. If both are out of the crates when we are gone, they evidently will get bored and begin to play. Which results in knocking over lamps and moving area rugs. I keep both crates together in a separate room. I would not move the crate to your bedroom. The puppy will settle down after she becomes crate trained. It will only take a few weeks, if you do not respond to the crying. Never let her out of the crate when crying, otherwise you are reinforcing the crying behavior. She will not become jealous. If you are looking for good information on training, you may want to look at www.leerburg.com Although the web site highlights German Shepherd Dogs, most of the training suggestions can be used for all dogs. It is an excellent source of information. Good Luck!

I always set a new puppy's crate right next to my side of the bed. That way if the pup becomes restless in the night I can put my hand on the crate to reassure it. You will be amazed at how calming that little contact is to a puppy. As the puppy gets a little older you will be able to move the crate to where ever you want it.
At 8 weeks, if you have the ability to do so, take a towell and wipe down the puppy's mother or littermates with it and then put the towell on the floor of the crate.

You will find this a good read.

Find an old large towel that you don't care about anymore and drape it over the crate after you put her in it. Also, give her an old sock or t-shirt of yours that has your scent on it, put it in the crate with her. Try playing some background music in the room her crate is in or record your voice and let it play in the background and close the door. Do not run in every time she starts to make noise, she's training you to come when she wants you. If your older dog sleeps in a crate at night, try putting them face to face so that the little one can see that she's not alone. If you don't want your dogs sleeping on your bed, by all means, do not start now and then attempt to stop it later, it won't work.

You know that sometimes babies just have to cry, you can't run in every time they do, as they need to learn how to comfort themselves, well the same goes for puppies, she will learn, it's just going to take some time. Hang in there and good luck.

What? NO!!! that's not ok. that's unacceptable and irresponsible. The dogs could be boarded with a vet or a kennel. Cats are comfortable with puppy sitters. you will possibly choose a puppy sitter to return a minimum of two or thrice an afternoon if not greater oftentimes. Small dogs = small bladder i'm chuffed which you asked this yet i'm disgusted that your husband thinks that is super. he's clueless and vicious. call Animal administration and spot what they inform you!!!! Ask your dogs's veterinarian and spot what they say!!! no person might say that that's ok. that is animal cruelty. If this occurs then you incredibly are enticing in animal cruelty and could be prosecuted to the fullest volume of the regulation. 22 hours?? 12 hours?? Insane! enable's placed you in a room for 22 hours with out water, food, or bathing room breaks. Why might or not that is distinctive for a dogs?

put her in the room with her. it will make her feel more comfotable. also i have heard that if you get a clock that ticks and stick it in a pillowcase and put it in with the puppy it will help it fall asleep. they also say to get the puppy to stop yelping and crying in its cage. to scare it. it souds mean but it worked with me. i dont know why it did but it did. hopefully you will figure something out.
