what is the next step after you have taken up chemistry and maths as HL subjects in IBDP ?

The petro-chem industry, despite having been in decline in the UK for a few years, still looks for well-qualified chemists. By having maths as well, you could go into the engineering part of the industry.

I have quite a few friends who earn very well in this business.
