In China tricycles can carry heavier loads. I understand rolling resistance on a tire is a relationship between load and air pressure. How does the additional wheel on a tricycle effect the total rolling resistance?

Weight distribution is better on three wheels than two, balance is also greatly improved.

Because the weight is dispersed into 3 sections. Instead of 2 wheels , each holding half the weight of the bike now are holding 1/3 the weight of the bike making each wheel have to hold less weight.

Example : (not including wheel weight)
bicycle weighs 18 pounds: each wheel would hold 9 pounds
tricycle weighs 18 pounds: each wheel would hold 6 pounds

Well, it also helps keep balance. And because each wheel with have a less amount to support, it allows them to rotate more freely.
