I live in a rural village surrounded by flooded fords, acres of surface water and crumbling lanes (you would not believe the pot holes!) so I need a vehicle that gets me up off the ground. I've been told to avoid the Freelander, have now had a bad report on the Nissan X-Trail and am now considering the Honda CR-V. Is this a good reliable car? I want something as economical as poss (I know 4x4 are not as economical as cars). Anyone got any ideas?

I currently have a Mitsubuishi Spacewagon that has been a fantastic car so the sports shogun might be an idea. aren't they rather on the huge side though?

Cr-v is a great car. also check out the subaru outback. a little more pricy but the come in sedans and wagons. The car sits high and has all wheel drive. ITs real reliable. I would look at teh outback, CR-V, or the highlander

Just a note here. The Honda CR-V has been tested by a company called South West Research. A govn't owned company. The reason they are testing this vehicle, is due to the wheel base. There have been many incidents with this vehicle for roll overs, due to the lack of space on the wheel base, on and off road. Now, this isn't just for this particular vehicle, other smaller SUV's with the same wheel base measurement are having similar issues. Please take your time, do your research, and then make your decision.
I do not suggest the Ford Escape, this same research institute is looking into why these vehicles electrical systems are instantly catching fire. The cause is unknown at this time.
Hope this helps.

Have a look at the Mitsubishi Shogun Sport. Its lighter than most other 4x4's but still has both High and Low Range Gearbox's. It has Automatic Free Wheeling Hubs as standard. Fuel economy is much better than most other 4x4's and comfort is very high.

You have surprised me that you have had a bad report for th x trail the 2.2 diesel is an outstanding vehicle not that there is much wrong with the Honda, if you bad report and is a word and mouth thing then its only somebodies opinion and as we are all different we tend to look for different things in the vehicle of our choice.

well i have an 84' jeep cj8 and i didn't have any improvments installed in it and it goes pretty much everywhere i take it. but it's not so economical. so my advice for you is to buy the land rover defender diesel. it's the best new offroader you can buy today, it's not so cheap but it will get you anywhere you'd want it to go.

If you can afford it a BMW X5 diesel, is a good choice.
Failing that a Subaru forester is a worthy vehicle.
Hope this helps good luck! :)
