It depends on what u understand through brain wash. I don't think it's wrong to have a religion which is based on doing what God asked us to do. U probably ask because you see certain Christians not doing what the rest of the world does(like talking dirty, intimate relationships before marriage etc. - "Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among YOU, just as it befits holy people; neither shameful conduct nor foolish talking nor obscene jesting, things which are not becoming, but rather the giving of thanks. For YOU know this, recognizing it for yourselves, that no fornicator or unclean person or greedy person—which means being an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and of God"-Ephesians 5:3-5).
Some religions like yours(probably) are too open minded (some even except gay marriages) or they don't have the capacity to influence their members. Why? They don't put so much accent on studying the Bible. I hope I didn't offend you.

Well first off let me clearly say that all religion can be defined as a cult. Not only in some dictionary definition way but also in action. If you enter a group which teaches you that which thoroughly convinces you of ideas that are pure fantasy, that dictates virtually every action within you life then you are in a cult. And that defines virtually every religion in existence. Some are indeed more dangerous than others,at this moment we have a huge Fundamentalist Christian movement in the US and I have to say that these people are a serious potential problem. To listen to the language that they use in thei literature you would see that they are building what could easily be turned into a violent movement if they chose to make that move to achieve their ends. They speak of their religious movement as if it's a battle, terms like "The Full Armor Of God" are spoken regularly, in order to place in the minds of their followers a sense of power and persecution. And I think that is no accident,it creates a group of millions who at a moments notice could easily be pushed towards forcibly taking power in areas that up until now they have simply tried to influence. That may sound paranoid but if one wants proof of how powerful such movements can be they need look no further than todays paper, how the radical islamic wing has completely absorbed the identity of all of Islam. And if you are a student of history who doesn't deny the truth when it's inconvinient you would also realize that the Nazi movement in germany also had a very solid Christian component, with many willing to act in the way they did because they believed they were doing Gods work to help purify the world.

Extreme? What if you were a member of a church where you turn over every cent that you make, to the church. Then the minister gives you back what he thinks you need to live on, in gods name.
It is obvious that many of today's Christians are looking for that big bang, that place to spend their way into heaven.
I love the preacher who every Sunday preaches fire and brimstone to his followers who are already "saved", then we pass the plate.
So many folks are taken in so easily by those who seem larger than life, God like. Yet we still return every Sunday, because there must be something we didn't understand about "turn before you burn", and we give and give and give. It is a good business venture, the professional church.

Honestly?...I think it's easier for some ppl to relate to some of these cults like they do because they find it easier to cope with the 'extreme' beliefs and practices more than it is to learn the basics of being God's child.
I hope that one day they'll find out just how easy it is to do what they were meant to do from birth.

some people have very little self confidence and are not natural leaders, they fall into the category of what is termed cannon fodder and are easy prey for predatory sects and cults that easily overwhelm this type of person, others like to believe that they are the elite in Christianity and this is evident by joining what seem to be exclusive Christian sects.

The answer to your question is varied. But everyone is "brain washed" to some degree or another in some things. I love to read novels and love to write, does this make me brainwashed?

FOR A SENSE OF BELONGING. Most of them have little sense of self worth or purpose. Out casts mainly are the victims.

Its got alot to do with the sense of confidence the preachers display.
It makes it more believable. For the preacher, it usually comes from their feelings of self righteousness and self loathing
