Any ideas on what my next car should be. Currently have a 1999 peaugeot 206 but head gasket recently went and cost me £400+ to fix! Previous car was a toyota corrolla which never let me down. Only got current car as part of my divorce settlement anyway. Had a Ford Fiesta about 10 years ago but Tempted to get another Corrola or Yaris from 2003 onwards. Had a Ford Fiesata about 10 years ago which was also a good runner but like current car, no boot space?Any ideas?

Beetles, fords, all of them have various problems when they get old. I would stay with Toyota if planning on keeping it for a long time. Toyotas usually stay running when other brands are completely knackered.
I just test drove a Yaris, it was extrarodinarily nice and lots of room (a four door). I have one 93 Toyota and last year bought my first new car since the 93 was bought new. That 93 has only had a starter and regular service (I used it in a delivery business and was starting the engine a dozen times a day).
So, Hon, for your money, and longevity Toyota is the way to go. BTW that new one has a 1.5/five speed, quite low pollution, and is extraordinarily fast.
Good luck!

If you got on well with your Corrola, then I'd go with that. The yaris is very nice too, I own a yaris, and its a great nippy car round town, cheap on fuel, cheap on insurance cheap on everything except the servicing!
Toyota seem to be the best for reliability, so are Honda. I'm looking at a used corrola at the moment to go up form my yaris (Want something a bit bigger and a bit more oomph ;)

If you like Toyota (understandably) then try the Prius

It is the most relaxing car to drive, smooth automatic, quiet when stationary.

the hybrid system is garunteed 10 years or 80000miles
and if you are in the UK they have a lower road tax band, and £0 london congestion charge

there are Prius groups on yahoo, look for one in your country & ask for feedback from them (don't rely on mainstream media reports as they are more interested in noisy agressive anti-social dinosaurs than finding a way beyond peak oil)

Like with any car, they are all machines and have problems with one thing or another.

Toyota is rated the number one car in the United States.
Honda is rated number two.

As a mechanic, I see alot of different problems with all cars. Please keep in mind that some car manufacturers own other name brands of cars. Like Ford owns Mazda, Jaguar, and another I forget. Nissan owns, Infinity, and so forth. So remember, you might think your buying a particular name brand, but it belongs to a bigger company.

Also, keep in mind. Most foreign vehicles cost more to repair than the American made ones, but you might not repair the foreign vehicle as much as the American one.

In my line of business, I see more American made vehicles or vehicles that American companies have purchased, more than I do foreign ones. I personally own both. A foreign car and an American truck. I've put more into the truck than the car, but when the time comes, I'm expecting to put more money into the repair bill for the foreign car.

Hope this helps.

Buy Japanese any time. Like you said, the Toyota never let you down. You only have to read this column to see how many Peugeot's conk out. The new Mazda 3 range has rave reviews.

Ford Focus, recently bought a 1.8 Zetec Edge in racing green, fantastic car, ok on mileage and the boot has enough space in it for about 3 bodies.
Plus they are very reliable, and parts of cheap.
If you want mileage then get the TDCI version.

I just bought a 2006 Corolla.
there will be a new model in 2007 so you can find good deals on "end of series".
I got the full optional 1.4i -5 doors for 15.000,00 euro.
160.000 Km and 5 years warranty is pretty good.

Please don't get the new Beetle, it's a fashion statement, and things have a tendency to go out of fashion. The ford Ka is a great example of this. Test drive a new shape Vauxhall Astra.
