My kitty does the hopping thing too, only she will leap in the air on all fours. I call it her "Matrix" move, lol. That's her way of entertaining herself as well as me! Definately funny to watch!

A cat will hiss and arch it's back in order to make a "formidable impression." Hissing and arching is a feline's protective mechanism, much like a dog's growl or the raising of the hackles. As far as your cat hopping, I have a couple of cats that do that, too. I also have a Siberian Husky that would rather bounce around than walk or trot. I think it's just a unique little trait that certain animals get and we just happen to think it's cute. Maybe they just think it's a better way of transportation.

Cats arch their backs to look larger when they feel threatened & hissing is a sign of caution. Similar to a rattlesnake when they are ready to strike will shake their rattle to alert they are ready to attack.
As for hopping--this is a sign of a healthy, happy cat-

Hissing and arching it's back are behaviours associated with things they dislike. I'm not possitive, but I guess it's in order to make the cat seem more formidable and impressive, in order to not be trifled with and let you know he means buisness.
As for hopping around on his side, I dunno. My friends cat does that as well.

I read somewhere that when a cat does that..is a sign that the can wants to prove that they are in control! Is a way to impose themselves!!
If he is playing with you and then does this... .The cat is trying to tell you that he is the master of the game...

yes all cats do that. My cat did that once when she was scared of this dog that happens to just come into our garden. She started hopping like she was ready to fight!
