I am asking this because I am not tired now, but when I get to work I will slowly get tired. I suffer from extreme sleep deprivation aka insomnia about 5 days a week (the other two I am basically sleeping) is there anything I can eat, drink that will keep me well awake and chipper at work? (Seriously, anything LEGAL?? Because I'm serious, this isn't a joke!) I've suffered this since middle school and moving to a different city, my psychologist said there really isn't anything other than sleep aids and strenuous exercise (I do the exercise, but NOT the sleep aids. Still doesn't work.) So what will help me stay wide awake and normal at work? Tips?

Sorry, but this is why I don't believe in seeing psychologists. They can't prescribe meds, and shouldn't necessarily offer opinions on what will and won't work medicinally, or be informed on treatments for chronic and severe conditions.

I've had the exact same problem for years, it started when I was about 5 and I'm now 53. Sleep aids probably won't help you, I was prescribed enough to knock out a linebacker for 3 years and would just get a bit drowsy for 10 minutes or so, then be wide awake again. Exercise only made me more energetic.

I'd strongly suggest a sleep study, but the psychiatrist who did mine told me was that I was beyond medical help, and needed to re-train myself to sleep. (He even told me that he could prescribe all the sleep aids I wanted, but I'd only get drowsy!)

I was told to get an alarm clock, and pick a 4 hour period in which to sleep, say from 3am to 7am. Go to bed at 3, and if you don't get to sleep in 15 minutes, get up. Then stay up until 3am the next night, and try again. Set your alarm, and get right up when it rings. Don't sleep past 7am.

Naps are not permitted, you can only sleep during the assigned hours. Keep a sleep diary on a calendar to note your progress.

At the end of every 6 week period, increase your sleep time by one hour. The 6th wk you start sleeping 5 hrs; the 12th wk, 6 hrs; the 18th wk, 7 hrs; the 24th wk, 8 hrs.

This is hard at first, but it really does work. I'm up to sleeping for 6 straight hours now. It's a process, and you just have to work with and through it.

As to what can keep you awake at work, there are caffeine pills, but I don't personally like taking them. They can make you feel jittery and uncomfortable, and upset your stomach. Ginseng teas may be a good choice. I've not tried energy drinks, but you might want to see if they help.

I hope that you'll at least try this for 6 weeks. Just give it a shot, it may be what you need, too. If not, please go for a sleep study.

I think you may be like me and do not really need all that much sleep. It may be all your worry about not getting enough that is making you upset at work.

It sounds like this has been going on for a long time. That is why I don't really think it is insomnia.

I only sleep 3-4 hours. I have been this way since I was a kid. I would get up and play or read.

I suggest that instead of trying to sleep when you can't or aren't tired you get up and do something productive or fun.

Trying to sleep when you can't and worrying about it very likely is what is making you feel tired. Also, since you believe you have not had enough sleep it becomes a self-fullfilling prophecy.

The exercise idea is a good one.

Forget the drugs and all that.

It Honestly Just Depends On The Baby.Both Of Mine Slept Threw the Night from the time they we are born they could each Sleep a high-quality eight hours or so with out waking up.Some Say They will begin dozing Threw the Night At approximately nine months and a few say faster it simply is determined by the youngster A lot of them don't sleep threw the night time for a long time.

I am wondering how much sleep you asctually get. Write down when you try to go to sleep, and when you actually do fall asleep. If you are tired after work, do you take a nap. If you do this may be causing you to have trouble at night. I do not know enough to give you really good advice, but to start, track when you try to go to bed and when you fall asleep (write that when you get up), and when you get up. You may be sleeping more than you realize, or sleeping at times other than night. Also, Is it that you can't sleep, or are there thoughts going through your mind. Insomnia is a side effect of many other difficulties. Hope this helps. Good luck,.

First, if you haven't already, see a doctor and get diagnosed. If it really is insomnia, instead of sleeping pills, I reccomend Valerian Root. It's a natural herb that you can usually get in pill form and it will help you sleep.
Also, have a hot drink before you go to bed. Sometimes, having a glass of red wine helps, as well.

hey! well the greatest thing you could have would be tryptophan, which is an amino acids, which makes up part of the serotonin. serotonin is chemical that relaxes the body!

so what to next... eating healthy IS important! make sure your diet consists mostly of fruit and veg (some people say the 'natural hygine diet' is excellent for people who have sleeping disorders... check it out online)

avoid eating past 8pm and avoid stimulants, like coffee, tea, alch etc. after 4pm.

the more you avoid junk food (which depleats your body of vitamins), the better for you... all as your body requires is the appropriate fuel to make everything 'just work!'

keep stress at bay, and meditation may help you to sleep!

Lipton tea makes "Quietly Cammomile" tea. When used with warm milk (instead of water) a cup at night will put you to sleep within 15 minutes.

Celestial Seasoning makes "Morning Thunder" tea which will wake you up.

try bikers coffee, which is shardz (methamphetamine) in coffee, or even better though, try a few huge hits of shardz from a glass pipe then a cup of coffee and a lucky strike afterward.

your going to have to use either sleep aids to help you sleep normally (i recommend ghb), or stimulants, which is what your asking for to keep you awake and feeling good. but nothing legal is gonna help aside from coffee and maybe ephedra products if you take enough, however you can get a prescription for amphetamines for adhd or narcoplepsy....but i would recommend just scoring some shardz which will hit harder and last longer than shardz' parent molecule, amphetamines.

I don't like taking sleep aids either. I take a natural substance called Melatonin. You can get it at any health store. It helps to fall asleep and doesn't leave you drowsy.
