The speaking in tongues was a special capacity offered to some disciples from the first century Christian congregation through the holy spirit to give them the possibility to preach and to bring glory to God in a different language. That was then. The Bible says it's over with that. Who today says that he\she can speak in languages is not a true christian. In the past they were speaking in an existent language (ex:a Jewish was speaking Greek so that the Greek would understand him). But nowadays people don't speak a certain language but something that can't be understood. If it's not from God than it's something demonic.
The book 'Religious Movements in Contemporary America' says that speaking in tongues is characteristically for Pentecostal and the Voodoo religion. So if someone ever did that he\she should stop doing it. It has no sense to speak in tongues nowadays.

Go to a pentecostal or charismatic church and listen to an emotional preacher getting the congregation energized, then go to the front for prayer. The minister will lay his hands on you and command you to speak it out and you will begin mumbling and yelling gibberish. You will think is the holy ghost, but in reality, it is nothing more than an emotional experience. You will likely cry, possibly faint, but you will be overcome with emotion. At least, this is how my Baptist friends have explained it to me.

Speaking in tongues is real.
On the day of Pentecost, (you can read acts chapter 2) those gathered were filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke with new tongues as the spirit gave them utterance.
I believe that this is the initial evidence of having the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling on the inside of you.
It is different than having the gift of interpretation of tongues. A person who can interpret tongues can translate this Heavenly language into a natural language.
Speaking in tongues as is discussed in Corinthians, is before the church. Why speak in tongues in front of the church when others can not understand what you are saying. You should have an interpreter or you will be out of order.
When you pray in the spirit, and speak in tongues, it is a direct line of communication between your spirit and God. Your spirit knows more about what you need than your own mind or flesh. Sometimes your spirit is able to intercede in prayer on the behalf of others.
We edify our own spirits when we pray in tongues. This is private and not before the church. Satan is the prince of the air and can hear what you pray when you pray aloud in your own natural language. He can not touch what you pray in the spirit!
But if God wants to use someone to deliver a message and the messenger is speaking in tongues. there must be an interpreter.

There seems to be a lot of spelling in tongues here. Words like tounges and interprate don't exist.
This is similar to the idea of speaking in tongues because this is just a person or group of people speaking gibberish. It does not exist in a spiritual context, rather like their god.

It's a spiritual gift, 1 Corinthians 12
There are diversities of gifts but the same spirit.
some of the gifts are, wisdom, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Yes it's through the Holy Spirit.

In The Acts of The Apostles chapter 2, we can read about the disciples of Jesus during the day of Pentecost, or 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus, were gathering in Jerusalem when suddenly they were filled with the Holy Spirit and were able to speak in languages that they never learned before. They were all Jews, or Galileans, and they spoke in 16 different languages, preaching about the wonderful work of God shown in the life of Jesus. As the result 3000 people repented and were baptized on that day.
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Acts 2:1-11.
Nowadays, the preaching of the Gospel is more world-wide. It is being preached in hundreds of languages in all of the countries of the world. Personally I have had the privileges of preaching the gospel in 8 languages, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Malaysian, Ibanese, Sundanese, Makassarese and Manadonese, and blessed with the conversion of many people in those different areas speaking those different languages.

It is not the speaking in tounges that is the real miracle. It is the person there to interprate it. There can not be one without the other. Othwise it is just jibberish.

It's been analyzed by linguists. It's gibberish that is too repetitive and unstructured to be a language and that varies from region to region based on the 'speakers' language and dialect (regional accent).
