Karate was created in Okinowa. Long before it was ivaded and taken over by Japan in the 1600's. So to say it is simply Japanese is not true.
I like the comparison they make on this web site. In the history section. Calling Karate Japanese is like calling a Luau or Hoola American traditions, they're not they were created hundreds of years before the US took over the land Hawaii.

heres a small history: there are a lot of forms of karate today, the traditional ones all come from the Okinawa Islands. Shaolin Kung Fu was taken from both the northern and southern parts of China, the northern forms focused mostly on kicking and the southern mostly on hand/arm techniques. they were then taught in the Okinawa Islands, Okinawa already had its own fighting form simply known as 'hand', but his was mixed with the Chinese martial arts and created Karate in various forms such as Shorin-ryu. these are still practised today. however, some forms of karate were modified and brought to other countries, the main one being Japan, this is where many people get confused about its history as they practice a form taught mostly in Japan. an example of this is Shotokan-ryu karate, however these were not officially recognised as a martial art until sometime in the 1920's hope i didn't just confuse you with that

Karate is the name for the martial art of Okinawa , Japan . It was originally called te (hand) . Later it was mixed with Chinese kung fu and was called kara(china) te(hand) . Around the early 1900's it was taken to Japan , the name was kept the same but the meaning was changed to kara(empty) te(hand) . This was to show that the art was not a weapon art , even though some are incorporated into karate . Another reason was Japan and China were having "problems" with each other at the time .

Japan is only true in a manner of speaking.
Traditional karate actually comes from the Okinawan island chain.
It existed there before Japan "assimilated" these islands. Their culture was quite different than that of the Japanese. They were more like the Chinese culture than the Japanese. The Okinawan islands entertained many ships that came into port and picked up many things over the years.
Karate is a mix of kung fu and a traditional fighting style from Okinawa called "Te".

It depends on what the discipline is that determines exactly WHERE the discipline was created.(since Karate is the COLLECTIVE name that includes ALL the Japanese and Okinawan disciplines as a whole) which the name is represented by two KANJI (drawn characters that represent sounds as an alphabet) Kara (meaning "open" or "empty") and Te (meaning "hand") so roughly translated, it means "empty hand".
Some of the disciplines of Karate has originally come from Japan while others were from the island Okinawa which was settled by the Japanese.
There are several disciplines that fall under the collective name of Karate: Goju-Ryu, Isshinryu, and Kenpo (or Kempo as it's sometimes referred to) are just a few of them.

Japan, plain and simple. People split hairs by saying Africa, China, India... These countries may have lent some ideas to karate, but karate itself is from Japan.
