FDR wanted very much to stand up for freedom and finagled things like Lend-lease that was actually military aid, over the objections of the Conservatives at the time.

However there were many Conservatives who wanted the US to at least allow Hitler to conquer the world, if not actually join that side. It was only when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor that FDR was able to quiet the conservatives enough to quickly declare war. Still many industrialists and Conservatives (including the Bush Grandparents) actively supported Germany.

I suspect that the many convoys that were getting Americans killed by the hundreds, and private groups like the Flying Tigers, would have eventually provoked an attack by Hitler or Japan, but if they had been smart enough to hold off a while longer, they might have succeeded in conquering not just Australia but the whole world.

That debate can be mirrored in Great Britain or France or Spain or the Netherlands. What's your point?

American politics were very isolationists, ever since the country was dragged into WWI from too many treaty entanglements. There was also the great depression. The country didn't want to go to war, period. Help and support was sent overseas, but it was seen as Europe's war and Japan was just too far away.

Pearl Harbor brought the US into WWII in the Pacific, in the Atlantic, in Europe, in Asia, in Africa.

It didn't just help Australia. The attack helped end the war for the world!
