And what can I do to curb this new cat phenomenon? He is the most gorgeous thing otherwise, but has just started cornering, hissing and swiping at guests. I can't afford to keep up the bandaids!!

maybe a good indicator of your guests - otherwise-

put the gracious one in a room until the guests leave

remember
dogs have masters
cats have staff....it's their house, not yours

I have the [EXACT] same problem. We have the most beautiful cat; friendly as can be to those who actually live in the home but people walk in the door & he acts nice at first; then he starts to meow; his tale gets big & before you know it - BOOM - he attacks. He is declawed but he uses his teeth & he learned how to use his back claws too - it's insane how badly some of the marks are that he leaves ( he weighs over 20 pounds; people are scared of him even before he attacks them just from past experiences & stories ) I personally think it's just a jealousy issue; I'm not 100 % sure though. That would be my best guess though; however in my case I think the cat is just trying to be a gaurd dog; he drinks out of the toilett, attacks strangers, eats the dog food, etc. it's insane haha.

But anyways - I'm sorry I wish I knew; the only thing that comes to mind is he is territorial of his surroundings or even you. This might sound mean; but in order to at least TRY breaking him of the habbit; have a spray bottle of water handy & when he goes after them spray him; we used this method before with one of our old cats when she clawed up the couch & it worked. Good luck .

He is scared. Try feeding him his favorite food when a guest comes near him. Or hold him and comfort him and don't let your guests get their hands near him. He may have a reason for the fear. Be extra nice to him when guests are around never scold him or punish him at all. Be very reassuring.

Cats just are weird that way they really dont like people who they don't hang out with and your cat is pissed because you did not tell him you will have company and he is upset that you did talk to him first. So he is venting and being rude. I would just put him in another room until he chooses not to be rude anymore.

Because she hates meeting new people, most cats are this way. Usually because they aren't treated that good, or had a bad experience with strangers (people harm cats for fun). She could also be protecting her teritory.

Well he's probebly being territorial to strangers. Once he gets to know your guests after long periods of time he wont do it so much.

I think he may be trying to dominate his new home. Or maybe he had bad experiences with people. Either way, spray him with a water bottle to teach him that is not ok.

Maybe he's jealous you got other company. Give him more hugs. Male creatures like female creatures that do that. It may calm him down.
