1. Candles & torches used as light source (no electric lights then)

4. Later in science, to provide a measurement for light intensity (Foot-candle: the amount of light from one candle, one foot away.

The same as they're used today. For light in the home and for liturgical prayer purposes in church.

uh they...lit it on fire and let it burn? probably for churching purposes, and light, since they didn't have a stand lamp back then.
