Or aren't they sane?

I agree with the poster that said that some people are easily led, but thier own life experiences and current enviroment may also play a part. Growing up in Waco, I often frequented a very popular college hangout that David Koresh himself also frequented. By outside appearance he seemed like a normal, typical guy, but little did everyone know what he was apart of until much later. It's a combination of factors, possibly due to being lonely, wanting a sense of belonging to a family, promise of monetary gain or spiritual salvation. It's not inclusive to any set social group the diversity levels in some cults range from those who lack income and education to those who are wealthy and hold several college degrees. Are they sane? Probably not in the right frame of mind, and many cults prey on these type of people for easy pickings. Sad but true.

What are the hallmarks of a cult? Control, looking up to a charismatic leader, giving total obedience to same, abandoning all your previous friends/family/money, fear of not being accepted if you dare to question or critcise, etc. Lots of sane people get mixed up because the leaders are so clever and they play on people's needs and fears. Once theyr'e accepted into the group they feel fulfilled, needed, etc. It's only if they try to leave things get tricky. By then, it's too late. People who get mixed up in cults need help to escape. Of course, the other tricky thing is to define sanity. Don't think I'm in a position to help you with that!

Well, the only way to really know something is to experience it for yourself, so why don't you go to some cult services. If they convert you, you'll know you are sane, but if you are converted, uh-oh - maybe you are just a believer. After all, you could never be crazy right?

I think it is a very small step from "normal" religions to cults. If you listen to what believers say then you quickly realize that they will believe anything and commit insane acts in total confidence of their correctness.

If you can find a copy I highly recomend "Moonwebs: a journey into the mind of a cult" by Josh Freed.

Because they are lonely or maybe just enjoy the philosophies the cult follows.

And of course they are sane. It's natural for humans to want to belong to a group and believe in something bigger than themselves.

Who really knows what drives somebody to do what they do. If I have to guess... I would then say, that maybe it is something to do with some people needing to "belong", to something, or feel part of something. I guess "people" are always trying to find their place in life, and sometimes that comes in form of a group or "cults" as some people call them. It is hard to say... I have never attracted anything like that.

Because they are brainwashed into the belief that something better awaits them after death... and woe betide you if you disagree as you are in league with the devil.... So... after being brainwashed by any religion could you be declared sane?

Because they offer you a sense of belonging, a simple solution to all of life's problems and stuff to do twenty four hours a day. People hate being confused and lonely and they will do almost anything to avoid those two things.

I was born and raised in a crazy, dangerous one and I stayed there for 30 years.

All I can say (for me) is that when you're born and raised in it, it's normal to you. You actually think that everyone else is dumb for not thinking the way you do.

Now that I'm out, i look back and say, "Wow. I was a complete dumba** all those years!" But since I was born there, it was hard to see it as anything but normal since I'd never known anything else.
