It is a good way for families to become more involved in decision-making processes. Go with an open mind and be tolerant of the views of others. Be clear how you can support the process which the conference hopes to achieve. The family member who the conference was set up for is the focus so encourage every one to be positive and bring as many views which can move the "situation" on.
Families may be in conflict at the time of the conference but this should not over-shadow what the conference hopes to achieve.
Working with professionals can be daunting but they usually want to achieve positive outcomes so don't feel intimidated by them.
Every one at the conference will be asked their views so be clear what you think should be done to resolve the situation. If you are not a good public speaker write down your views before hand so that you feel comfortable discussing them. Always bare in mind what the desirable outcome(s) may be for the family member and hopefully the family can work together to achieve it.

Everyday we get together at the dining table for dinner. That's our family group conference. Sometimes we talk a lot, and sometimes we don't talk so much.
And in the process I collect 2 points with gratitude to you for having asked this very profound question.
