I recently went to an amateur art festival. This one exhibit had huge panoramic canvas pictures of landscape photos (taken with a digital camera). Up close the pictures looked like oil paintings, but they were actually digital photos printed on this canvas as art. The pieces were expensive (around $800). The girl said she took the photos on her digital camera herself, had the pictures professionally developed, and then printed them on the canvas herself - in house. These pictures were huge. There were panoramic style and were about 30" x 48" (2.5 ft x 4 ft). The canvas was attached to a wooden stretcher frame for direct hanging on a wall w/o need for a frame. I was wondering if anyone knew any more on this subject. Is there a special name for this process of digital photography onto canvas art? What kind of printer is used? Where do you get the pictures developed? What else is needed for this process? Starting costs? Where can I go for additional information on this subject?

One of the printers for this process is made by MacDermid - check out their website. It is a BIG investment to purchase the products to make a print this large.

An alternative is to find a local printer using this process and pay them to make your reproductions. They can scan your art at the proper resolution and adjust the colours before printing, saving you heaps of money. These prints are becoming quite common.

There is no special name, it's just an art or in this case a photo print on canvas. The process of putting a print on canvas has been around a while, no new ground broken here, although some would like you to think they did it first. Some art websites where anyone can post their art work or photos offer this sevice at very reasonable prices. Search under ''canvas prints''.

You have to work with a very big file ,like RAW file with your camera to have a poster size. After you can edite with Photoshop or other photomanipulation software. The print on canvas is not expensive, you can send your photo by e-mail to the shop, quick print, attach to the wooden frame. The big deal is the printer, to buy is very expensive. This kind of art you can find in many galleries. There are people, artists, after the print on canvas, painting on the picture (photo) with oil or other

I don't know where she had something so large printed.

I found some canvas-like paper that I can use on my printer. It is just regular size paper. The picture comes out nice.

I am trying to remember where I bought the paper......but I can't recall.

Check out mpix.com They print on canvas with the sort of no-external frame look that you are talking about. I've not tried that service but had very good results from other enlargments from them.
