And if so, what purpose does it serve?

Id say most do, though some are more strict than others. Many Christian denominations have their men in suits and women in dresses, sometimes a scarf over their head. It doesnt bother me unless they think they are all that much more "holy" because they dress like that. My Church has a less strict dress code that is not to wear shorts, short skirts or revealing clothes (for either men or women) during the service since it can be very distracting. But jeans and t shirts are alright, no need to buy flashy dresses and suits.

Yes... amish communities women wear dresses and certan colors etcetera, the nazarene church the women all weatr skirts, and I don't think that they wear make up. I am sure there are othe churches out there with dress codes those are just a couple of examples... I usually wear pants and a long sleeved t-shirt or tank top depending on weather, unless of course I am speaking (I am an adminstrative youth pastor interim) I have christian tattoos so according to some I am bad lol just because of ink...

I attend a Pentecostal church and no, there isn't a dress code. A lot of people wear jeans on Wednesday nights.

Yelp. Because some think it is more appropriate and looks better than someone wearing jeans with holes and a ragged tee shirt, although they would prefer you to look decent, I have never known a church to turn anyone away just because of how they dressed or looked.

The church I used to kinda did..... you had to dress nice or they kinda looked down on you. Part of the reason I stopped going. I think the purpose is for them to feel superior to everyone.

i would hope so! keeps the 'whores' out of the service. Come on, if there was no dress code, you just know teens would show up with their thongs showing both above and below their skirts, just like on the bus and at the mall.

Sure, many religions have dress codes so you do not distract people trying to think of God insted of you naked. Men are ussually more distracted than women are but today you have men with men and women with women so you never know?

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have one. Women can't wear pants or short sleeves; basically have to be extremely modest.
